(Not) 'Going Native'

As a Christian, and a Catholic, I should be 'in the world but not of the world.' That idea shows up in John 15:18-19 and 17:14-16, and Romans 12:2.

Joining a cloistered outfit like the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance (Trappists) is one option: they're part of the Benedictine family, contemplative monks and nuns.

Their website, www.ocso.org, gives a pretty good look at who they are and what they do. The FAQ page is a pretty good place to start, and that's another topic.

Like most Catholics, I'm part of the laity: folks who aren't nuns, monks, deacons, or priests. Part of our job is "...engaging in temporal affairs and directing them according to God's will...." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 898)

Love and the Status Quo


Applying God's will to temporal/worldly affairs does not mean trying to drag America back to the 'good old days' before 1954, or 1848, or some other bygone day.

We can't accept the status quo, either. I'll get back to that.

The Catholic Church is catholic: καθολικός, universal, not tied to one era or one culture.

For two millennia, we've been passing along the same message: God loves us, and wants to adopt us. All of us. (Ephesians 1:3-5; John 3:17; Catechism, 52, 1825)

That's why Jesus, the Son of God, became one of us, died on Golgotha, and then stopped being dead. (Catechism, 430-655, 2669)

There's more to our faith, of course. I'm expected to love God, love my neighbor, see everybody as my neighbor, and treat others as I'd like to be treated. (Matthew 5:43-44, 7:12, 22:36-40, Mark 12:28-31; Luke 6:31 10:25-27, 29-37; Catechism, 1789)

Acting as if God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — and what Our Lord taught — matter is what 'applying God's will to temporal affairs' means. (July 27, 2014)

The Nicene Creed is a pretty good summary of our faith. "...We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come" — but this isn't a 'pie in the sky by and bye" faith.

Crime and/or Evil


I enjoyed the radio adventures of Chickenman: mostly for the campy humor.

I was one of 'those crazy kids' back then, and recognized that the fantastic fowl's comedic battle against "crime and/or evil" contained a (tiny) element of truth.

Sometimes what's legal is not right.

I'm older and balder now, and became a Catholic. But what's legal still isn't necessarily right.

If I thought the perfect society existed in 1st century Rome, or American suburbia in the 1950s, I'd be doing what I can to restore that way of life. But like I've said before, we haven't had a golden age. (July 12, 2015; August 3, 2014)

We don't have a truly just society today, either, so accepting the status quo isn't an option. (May 24, 2015; May 3, 2015)

I'm supposed to be a good citizen here in America: contributing "...to the good of society in a spirit of truth, justice, solidarity, and freedom...." (Catechism, 2239)
But as Paul wrote to the Philippians, "...our citizenship is in heaven...." (Philippians 3:20)

As a Catholic, I must submit to the authority of whoever runs the territory I'm in: unless doing what they say would violate the 'love God, love your neighbor, everyone's your neighbor' principle. (Catechism, 2239, 2242)

Legal, but Not Right


I'd have to refuse an order to commit genocide, for example, even if the full authority of the United States Congress and Supreme Court was behind it. (Catechism, 2313)

I'm no fan of ethnic cleansing or eugenics, partly because many of my ancestors are of an 'inferior race,' I'm rather close to being Lebensunwertes Leben, and that's several more topics. (April 26, 2015; February 13, 2015: December 5, 2014)

Even the most strident anti-immigrant American politicos have stopped short of campaigning for genocide, though: happily. Maybe we learned something from the Armenian genocide and a German chancellor's eugenics efforts. Yet more topics.

Not-so-happily, killing innocent people is legal: as long as it's done when they're under an arbitrary age; or are sick enough. I think this is wrong. More to the point, the Church says it's not right — because human life is sacred, and murder is wrong, even if it's legal. (Catechism, 2270-2279)

Don't worry: I won't rant about God being a Democrat/Republican/whatever. Like I keep saying, I'm not conservative, liberal, Democrat, or Republican: I'm Catholic. (November 3, 2008)

Faith that's "Two Coats of Paint" Deep


'Going native,'1 adopting the lifestyle of the locals, is easy: but it's not necessarily a good idea.

Pope Francis talked about that sort of thing last year:
"...In essence, Francis explained, they are 'worldly Christians, Christians in name, with two or three Christian attributes, but nothing more'. They are 'pagan Christians'. The have 'a Christian name, but a pagan life' or, to put it another way, 'pagans painted with two coats of Christianity: thus they appear as Christians, but they are pagans'...."

It's not 'those people over there.' Anybody can slide away from Truth. The trick is paying attention to what's important:
"...The signs to understand what we are moving toward, the Pope said, 'are in your heart: if you love and are attached to money, to vanity and pride, you are on that bad path; if you seek to love God, to serve others, if you are gentle, if you are humble, if you serve others, you are on the good path'. Moving Forward


Going with the flow, accepting the way things are, isn't an option. Neither is desperately clinging to the way things were. Both are a 'two coats of paint' superficial Christianity: different colors, but the same lack of depth.

That leaves one direction: forward. Like I said last week, change happens. Part of our job is pushing it in the right direction.

Loving our neighbors, all our neighbors, means social justice is a priority.

That doesn't mean forcing everyone into one cultural mold, or insisting one 'correct' form of government. We're not supposed to be all alike. (Catechism, 1901, 1897-1917, 1928-1942)

We're told to work with what we have, correcting what is unjust, and supporting what is right. (Catechism, 1936-1938, 2401-2449)

It won't be easy, or fun. As someone said, "humans are allergic to change."

But I think we can build a better world. I am sure that we must try.

Climate Change Talks, and Remembering King Cnut

Golda Meir,1 Henry Kissinger,2 or someone else, said "even a paranoid can have enemies."

I do not think humanity is doomed to extinction, or that life on Earth will end because we built factories. I do, however, think we need to use our brains: and take care of the planet we live on.

Learning, Sometimes From Our Mistakes

It's easier to spot our cities from space now, compared to the days when Dārayava(h)uš helped bankroll the Second Temple in Jerusalem. Kūruš, another Achaemenid ruler, had okayed that project. Those names came to my language by way of Latin, so they're called Darius and Cyrus in my Bible's translation of Ezra 5:7 and 14: and that's another topic.

Psalm 8 is one of 73 that folks say King David composed: which would make it about three millennia old.

Back then, cuneiform was the latest thing in data storage and retrieval tech, and the crane and lewis irons were five centuries in the future. But folks realized that humans weren't ordinary critters:
"4 What are humans that you are mindful of them, mere mortals that you care for them?

"5 Yet you have made them little less than a god, crowned them with glory and honor."

We've learned quite a bit since then: sometimes from our mistakes.

Hydraulic Mining

Roman engineers removed overburden with water, exposing gold-bearing strata, two millennia back. Pliny the Elder called the technique ruina montium, wrecking mountains. Las Médulas, a World Heritage Site, is what's left of a Roman-era mining operation.

My Spanish is quite rusty, but I think las médulas means something like "the piths:" which would be a rather poetic way of describing the cored landscape left by runia montium.

Today's hydraulic mining tech started in 1853, during the California Gold Rush. Sluicing the landscape downstream gave California tax revenue by the millions — and major flooding in the Sacramento Valley.

Farmers sued miners when mining debris buried croplands, and eventually the Supreme Court got involved. That lot called hydraulic mining "a public and private nuisance;" Congress passed the Caminetti Act of 1893,3 and today we're a whole lot more careful.

I'll skip the usual moralizing about wealth being evil. It's greed and a love of money that gets us in trouble. (1 Timothy 6:10; Hebrews 13:5; Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2536)

Badlands - - -


Badlands National Park looks a bit like Las Médulas, but its rugged terrain isn't the result of mining. The oldest exposed rocks are about 75,000,000 years old, formed when the Western Interior Seaway covered that part of North America.

At least one asteroid hit Earth, most of the dinosaurs died — we call the survivors "birds" — and life went on. So did the Laramide Orogeny. We got the Rocky Mountains and Black Hills out of that, which brings me back to the Badlands.

Central North America was well above sea level some 56,000,000 years back, and Earth was enjoying a nice warm spell. That peaked out after a few million years, followed by a cooling trend that lasted until another asteroid hit where Chesapeake Bay is now. (May 8, 2015; September 27, 2013)

Back then, lush subtropical forests covered much of North America: including palm trees in what's now Wyoming. Oxygen levels were high, on average — around 130 percent what we're used to now.

But like I said, things were already cooling off when an asteroid hit. Glaciers spread over Antarctica's pine forests, primates were getting less squirrel-like, and more like the assorted lorises and lemurs, tarsiers, monkeys and apes we've got now.

Earth cooled slowly for the next 10 million years. Central North America was dryer, but still warmer than today's climate. Eight million years ago Antarctica's glaciers were almost as thick as they are today, and Earth's temperature plummeted.

Geologists put the official start of the current ice age at 2,580,000 years before this year's big United Nations climate meeting: or the Italian Renaissance. On this scale, a few centuries don't amount to much.

The last time I checked, scientists figure that the last glacial period, the "Ice Age" you hear and read about, isn't the last one in the current ice age. We may or may not be able to stave off the next glacial period.

Or maybe my joke about 'Save the Mammoth' and 'Dino Power' activists will resemble political wrangles in the not-too-distant future — a thousand or so years from now. (February 20, 2015)

I think it's prudent to remember just how old Earth is. I don't see a problem with knowing that the "ancient mountains" mentioned in Psalms 76, 5 are comparatively new. (July 11, 2014)

Being a Catholic, I recognize discoveries as opportunities for "greater admiration" of God's work. (Catechism, 283)

A thirst for truth and God is buried in each of us: deeply, in some cases, I'll grant. We're made from the stuff of this world, "in the image of God:" creatures of matter and spirit, with senses and reason, able to observe the world's order and beauty. (Genesis 1:26, 2:7; Catechism, 27, 31-35, 282-289, 355-361)

Nitrogen Dioxide, Industry, Being Human (and More than you Need to Know about the Congo River Basin)

Folks at the University of Heidelberg's Institute for Environmental Physics prepared that map, using data from the SCIAMACHY instrument on ESA's Envisat.

SCIAMACHY stands for SCanning Imaging Absorption SpectroMeter for Atmospheric CHartographY, and isn't the most-pronounceable — or memorable — acronym I've seen.

Nitrogen dioxide is one of many ways nitrogen and oxygen combine. There's nitric oxide (NO); nitrous oxide, laughing gas (N 2O); and dinitrogen trioxide, tetroxide, and pentoxide (N2O3, N2O4, and N2O5). They've got various uses, nitric oxide shows up in our biochemistry, and I'm drifting off-topic.

Where was I? Earth's lower atmosphere, acronyms, nitrogen and oxygen. Right.

Nitrogen dioxide comes from internal combustion engines, and thermal power stations; plus a bit from pulp mills, butane gas heaters, and electrical storms.

Electrical storms might account for the slightly-above-average levels of nitrogen dioxide over the Congo River basin. Oddly, there isn't nearly as much over the Amazon basin.

Europeans ran the Congo Free State from 1877 to 1908, and the Belgian Congo from 1908 to 1960. That's when European colonial empires finally went out of fashion.

The place was called République du Congo/Republic of Congo for a few years. Folks running the former French colony of Moyen Congo/Middle Congo called their turf Republic of Congo, too. Folks added the Congo capital cities' names to make the names different: Congo-Léopoldville and Congo-Brazzaville.

The name Republic of Zaïre lasted long enough for to get now-obsolete maps printed. I think the territory got its current name, Democratic Republic of the Congo, in 1997. The place is still a violent mess.

Mining is a big part of the regional economy, but that's mainly in the eastern part of the Congo River's drainage. Maybe someday, when folks living near the Congo River find decent leaders, and start rebuilding their homelands, they'll have industrial pollution as a crisis.

Right now, survival is looking pretty good. My opinion.

That brings me to nitrogen dioxide, and why there's a glob of it over my country's rust belt, Flanders, and a disturbingly large fraction of China. That's a problem, since NO2 is a toxic gas. Concentrations found in and downwind of industrial areas won't necessarily kill you: but it's not healthy.

That, finally, brings me to a cluster of recent news items. I expect to read the usual 'and we're all gonna die!' op-eds, as a series of international environment and global climate meetings approach. Chicken Little's ardent disciples may be sincere: but sky is not, in my considered opinion, falling.

However, getting back to Psalms 8:6, we really are "little less than a god," with the power and responsibilities that go with our nature.

One of our jobs is taking care of Earth's resources: for our reasoned use, and for all future generations. The natural world got along without us, but now that we're here — we're responsible for its maintenance. (Genesis 1:26-27, 2:7; Catechism, 339, 952, 339, 952, 2402-2405, 2415, 2456)


1. China's Air Cleanup Plan

"China - the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases - has announced details of its climate action plan.

"The office of Prime Minister Li Kegiang said that emissions 'will peak by around 2030' and China would work hard to achieve the target even earlier.

"The statement echoes China's declaration last November following a US-China summit.

"China's pledge comes ahead of talks late this year in Paris to seek a new global deal on climate change...."
Reading this makes it easier for me to take this year's international 'climate change' meetings seriously. There wouldn't, I think, be much point in discussing North American landfills or Germany's Autobahn, if the diplomats were going to politely ignore China's industrial boom.

The good news, from my viewpoint, is that China is finally recovering from the Qing dynasty's meltdown. Folks there have a long, hard, road ahead: but it looks like the country's current leadership is starting to realize that what looks good on paper isn't necessarily practical.

I think it helps that tech like ESA's Envisat lets us see what's really happening.

There was a day when reading official reports from bureaucrats and political appointees, and occasionally getting permission to collect on-site samples, was the best — or only — way to collect environmental information. I'm glad those days are over.

Being Reasonable — and Having Hope


This BBC News piece included an op-ed/analysis:

"This is a significant moment in international climate negotiations. For years China argued that it was too poor and underdeveloped to even consider accepting any obligations to curb its greenhouse gases.

"Now we're witnessing the world's largest emitter playing by the UN's rules and promising even deeper cuts that those suggested some months back. For diplomats and ministers hoping to see a meaningful deal at the climate summit in Paris at the end of the year, this will be a welcome step.

"The size of cuts, and the timescale, will of course be judged by many as too little and too late. But for anyone who endured the collapse of talks at the Copenhagen summit six years ago, China is playing a very different and far more constructive game. Will it actually make any difference to global warming?

"Scientists always say it does not matter to the atmosphere where the emissions come from and China's will continue to rise for the next 15 years or so, and on their already gargantuan scale.

"And today's announcement does not mean that Chinese use of fossil fuels is coming to an end any time soon. On the same day that China has announced this climate plan it also began construction of a massive pipeline that will bring it a lot of gas from Russia...."

About "the size of cuts, and the timescale," I emphatically don't think it's "too little and too late."

Sure, it'd be nice if everybody everywhere could agree to never produce anything harmful — starting tomorrow.

But it took centuries of steam engines, powered vehicles — mostly burning fossil fuels — and industrial-scale chemical production, to get where we are today.

China's leaders started developing industry in their territory in the 1950s: but in the 1960s, 60 percent of China's workforce was still agricultural. The idea had been to build an industrial worker's paradise by 1961. Droughts and famine didn't help that plan succeed, and that's another topic.

Not even wildly-optimistic futuristic visions, like Menzies and Korda's "Things to Come" imagined that Utopia could be created overnight.

I think planning to get emissions of an emerging industrial civilization under control in only 15 years, just eight decades after industrialization began, is optimistic. But I also think it may be an achievable goal.

For me, the comparatively modest French-Chinese statement of intent is much more reassuring than a rehash of the Great Leap Forward (大跃进). It sounds like the People's Republic of China's Premier of the State Council, Li Kegiang (李克强) is ready to let his country get back on its feet:
"...China will work with the international community to seek a 'fair, reasonable, win-win' global climate governance system, Li said."

2. EPA and Toxic Emissions: Law, Preference, and Ethics

"The US Supreme Court has blocked a key government attempt to limit pollution from the country's power plants.

"In a 5-4 split, the court ruled that the Environmental Protection Agency failed to factor in the full financial cost to industry of the changes.

"The government introduced new rules to restrict emissions of toxins, including mercury, three years ago...."
I've long since stopped trying to figure out why or how folks on the Supreme Court come up with their opinions. Whatever their idealistic or Constitutional role should be — the practical reality is that they don't like the EPA's proposal, so it can't be used. End of story. This chapter, anyway.

My guess is that the EPA will try again, and see if the Court likes the new version.

Interestingly, the Court's claim that EPA regs should take cost into account makes sense.

The Decalog says theft is wrong. It's even in the short list our Lord recited for a wealthy young man. (Exodus 20:15; Deuteronomy 5:19; Matthew 19:18)

Since loving our neighbor should be a very high priority, we're not even allowed to steal if we're powerful and it's technically-legal to take what's not rightfully ours. That includes any sort of "excessive expenses and waste." Top priority is loving God, of course. (Catechism, 2083, 2196, 2409)

Getting back to the EPA emissions proposal, it'd be nice if government agencies had to think about how much their regulations will cost the rest of us — and explain why we'd lose more without them.


3. European Union Climate Position Statement: The Lords of Creation Speak?

"European Union ministers are seeking an ambitious, durable and legally binding deal to curb global warming, enforced through five-yearly reviews, a draft of their position statement for U.N. climate talks shows.

"EU environment ministers meet on Sept. 18 in Brussels to iron out their joint position ahead of the U.N. talks in Paris in December. Diplomats have already drawn up a draft text.

"The Paris climate agreement must be 'legally binding in order to enshrine the strongest expression of political will and provide predictability and durability', says the EU ministers' draft seen by Reuters.

"It calls for five-yearly reviews to ensure temperature rises are capped at 2 degrees Celsius, the necessary limit according to scientists to prevent the most devastating climate change...."
I'm — impressed — that the European Union apparently has decided that Earth's average temperature will rise no more than two degrees Celsius, presumably over a five-year period. I've discussed King Cnut and the limits of executive authority before. (September 21, 2014)

Somewhat more realistically, they also seem to realize that dealing with "the impact of changing weather" is a good idea: and will cost money.

It's also a tad reassuring to read that Europe's leaders say they'll cut emissions by 40 percent — at least — compared to 1990 levels. Their target date is 2030. I'm pretty sure that some folks won't like that because it's too much change, and others because it's too little.

The good news is that European industry's contribution to Earth's atmospheric fug peaked in 1979. European emissions, according to the Reuters article, amount to about 10 percent of the world's industrial effluvia. China is the current world's champ in that area, at 25 percent.

But, like I said before, that may be changing in the next few decades.

Decreeing that Earth's climate shall obey the dictates of the European Union seems to involve some whopping great assumptions.

The biggest of the lot, I think, is that everything on this planet happens because humans are here: or at least everything that's changing. That smacks of the old 'lords of creation' attitude that got us into this mess to begin with.

Sagittarius B2, Water, and Asteroid Mining

Scientists have found a complex organic molecule near this galaxy's core; and water vapor in a planet's atmosphere, some 122 light-years away. Closer to home, America's Congress is deliberating on a bill that could allow asteroid mining: if other nations don't get conniptions.

Pillars Beneath Earth and NASA


While doing time in college, a fellow-student informed me that the sun goes around Earth, not the other way around — because Joshua 10:12-13 says so. He may have been sincere, but I'm pretty sure he's wrong.

Oddly enough, I've yet to run into someone who seriously believes that Earth is flat, supported by pillars, as described in Job 9:6-7. I suspect that long distance telephone service to antipodal regions helped dispel that idea.

But if I assumed that certain parts of the Bible, like those verses in Job, were word-for-word true, exactly as a literal-minded American would read them: I'd have to believe Earth is flat.

If that were true, communications satellites would be hard to explain, space probes would have been crashing into the firmament, and a vast conspiracy would have been keeping 'the truth' from us. That seems — unlikely, to say the least.

I'll grant that I've never kept heading west until I circumnavigated the globe. My overland travels never took me beyond North America's west coast, and I've never actually seen places like New York City. For all I know, the world may end a few miles west of California. But again: that seems unlikely.

"Frequent Reading of the Divine Scriptures"


I take the Bible, Sacred Scriptures, very seriously. As a Catholic, I have to. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 101-133)

I also have to read the Bible, frequently:
"The Church 'forcefully and specifically exhorts all the Christian faithful. . . to learn the surpassing knowledge of Jesus Christ, by frequent reading of the divine Scriptures. Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ.112"

That doesn't mean that I must believe that the Bible is a science textbook, written by someone with the viewpoint of a metaphor-challenged contemporary American. This is one of the best short descriptions of the Bible that I've seen:
"...Know what the Bible is – and what it isn't. The Bible is the story of God's relationship with the people he has called to himself. It is not intended to be read as history text, a science book, or a political manifesto. In the Bible, God teaches us the truths that we need for the sake of our salvation...."

God Thinks Big


I'm not upset at the idea that God thinks big, and apparently is not limited by the imagination of ancient Mesopotamians.

I also think that faith and reason, religion and science, get along fine: or should. (Catechism, 39, 159, 286)

Trying to replace faith with science, pleasure, or anything else, is idolatry: and a very bad idea. (Catechism, 2112-2114)

As I've said before, I'd be impressed if God's creation was a tidy little affair, a few thousand miles across and no more than a few millennia old. As it is: I'm really impressed. (September 21, 2014)
"The question about the origins of the world and of man has been the object of many scientific studies which have splendidly enriched our knowledge of the age and dimensions of the cosmos, the development of life-forms and the appearance of man. These discoveries invite us to even greater admiration for the greatness of the Creator, prompting us to give him thanks for all his works and for the understanding and wisdom he gives to scholars and researchers"

Wondering how things began and where we're headed is part of being human. Learning about God's universe is what we're supposed to do. (Catechism, 282-289, 2293)


1. Organic Molecules in Sagittarius B2

"Iso-propyl cyanide has been detected in a star-forming cloud 27,000 light-years from Earth.

"Its branched carbon structure is closer to the complex organic molecules of life than any previous finding from interstellar space.

"The discovery suggests the building blocks of life may be widespread throughout our galaxy.

"Various organic molecules have previously been discovered in interstellar space, but i-propyl cyanide is the first with a branched carbon backbone...."
Iso-propyl cyanide isn't "organic" the way kumquats grown nothing but soil, manure, water, and sunlight, and are organic. In this context, "organic" means "of, relating to, or derived from living organisms;" or chemistry of or designating carbon compounds. (www.thefreedictionary.com)

Scientists found iso-propyl cyanide in Sagittarius B2, one of the largest molecular clouds in the Milky Way galaxy, and the largest one near our galaxy's core. It's about 150 light-years across, has around 3,000,000 times as much mass as our sun, and is one of the galaxy's major 'star factories.'

We're starting to understand how hydrogen gets converted into every other element, and how stars and planets form.

In places like Sagittarius B2, radiation from newly-formed stars heats microscopic dust grains in the cloud: apparently causing chemical reactions that end in complex molecules like iso-propyl cyanide. And, maybe, given time and the right circumstances: life.

I don't think that there is life on other planets, or that there is not life on other planets. Right now, we don't know.

If we don't find life elsewhere in the universe, my guess is that there will be: as soon as we get out there, and decide that having other "Earths" would be a good idea. We're finding the raw materials, everything we need for terraforming, throughout the galaxy. And that's another topic. (October 11, 2014)

Meanwhile, I won't say that there can't be life on other worlds. That'd be as silly as claiming other worlds can't exist because Aristotle said so. (February 23, 2014)

2. HAT-P-11b Weather Report: Sunny, Hot, Traces of Water Vapor

"NASA announced yesterday that water vapor had been detected on exoplanet HAT-P-11b

"NASA announced yesterday that a team of astronomers had detected water vapor on one small planet about the size of Neptune. The researchers, who published their findings in the journal Nature, were able to detect water vapor in the atmosphere of planet HAT-P-11b by looking at the changes in light as it passed in front of its star. They used the Hubble, Spitzer and Kepler telescopes for observations.

"As the BBC reports, this is the smallest planet whose atmosphere has been analyzed with this method. Previously, the method was applied only to large gas giants, the size of Jupiter. Smaller planets weren't large enough or had too many clouds to get good observations. Because HAT-P-11b had a clear, cloudless atmosphere, they were able to get a good look at the composition of the atmosphere: it's 90 percent hydrogen, with a good amount of water vapor thrown in...."
HAT-P-11b is another name for Kepler-3b, a roughly Neptune-diameter planet about 122 light-years away in the general direction of Deneb. A NASA press release calls it a "a warm world thought to have a rocky core and gaseous atmosphere."

"Warm" in this case is an understatement, or maybe a euphemism. Instruments indicate that HAT-P-11b's temperature is around 878 Kelvin, or about 605 Celsius/1,121 Fahrenheit. That's very roughly midway between the melting points of lead and iron.

HAT-P-11b is not, by any stretch of the imagination, 'Earth-like.'

But this is the first time that scientists have detected molecules in the atmosphere of a planet this close to having Earth's mass.

Seeking Clear Skies, Water, Oceans, and — Maybe — Life

Larger Jupiter-like planets are easier to see because of their impressive girth and relatively inflated atmospheres. Scientists found water in HAT-P-11b's atmosphere using a technique called transmission spectroscopy. It's related to absorption spectroscopy, another phrase you're not likely to hear every day. Here's how NASA describes it:

The vertical lines above and below each "Data" dot show how high or low the actual data might be, with the dot showing what the scientists' instruments say.

Now that they've found indications of water vapor in HAT-P-11b's atmosphere, scientists will be using similar techniques on smaller exoplanets, including super-Earths. They've got a good chance of detecting water vapor and other molecules.

Finding evidence of oceans and life: that will take longer.

3. Asteroid Mining: Water and Law

"Chris Lewicki is trying to get water from a stone. A really big stone thousands of miles from Earth.

"The president of space mining firm Planetary Resources used to oversee robotic Mars missions at Nasa, but today he's betting big on asteroids.

"The chunks of matter hurtling through the cosmos are rich in valuable minerals, he says, but finding water could be like striking liquid gold.

" 'We can tell from telescopes that look out from mountaintops here on Earth that certain types of asteroids can be relatively abundant in water and water-bearing minerals,' he says...."
Back in my 'good old days,' I thought the Outer Space Treaty of 1966 was well-intentioned, idealistic, and monumentally impractical.

Saying that space exploration should be "for the benefit and in the interests of all countries and shall be the province of all mankind" sounds good.

One problem is that one of the world's hundred-plus national leaders may think that any action he didn't order is a plot against his regime.

Then there are tightly-wound scientists who disdain any association with businesses, folks who dislike anything American, and others who still yearn for a 'worker's paradise.'

A few may even think a return to the 'good old days' of the 19th century is possible: and desirable. I'm not one of them.

For one thing, we can't go back. Time and change don't work that way.

For another: we learned why full-bore laissez-faire capitalism is a bad idea in the 19th century; and were learning why communism doesn't work in the 20th. Actually, I think communism would work: with people designed along the lines of naked mole rats, ants, or termites. In a society where the citizens are human, not so much.

The point is that we learned, and continue to learn.

Debbie Siegelbaum's article says that although Earth's moon may be off-limits for commercial operations, asteroids may not be covered by the four-decade-old treaty. She may be right.

In any case, I'm pretty sure that in the short term — the next few generations — legal and political wrangling over how folks should live and work in space will provide employment for lawyers, politicos, and bureaucrats.

I'm also pretty sure that we'll develop laws and customs allowing common-sense use and conservation of natural resources we find wherever we go: eventually.

But when the 1966 Outer Space Treaty is as old as the Code of Ur-Nammu is today — we'll probably still be sorting out tangles left by the previous generation's lawmakers.

I'm quite confident that they won't be the same tangles we have today. We have, over the eight millennia or so of written history, been learning from past mistakes. The pace has been frustratingly slow: but I think we have been making progress. (May 6, 2012)

Thar's Water in Them Thar Asteroids!

Liquid hydrogen and oxygen are a very efficient rocket fuel. But whether they're the "most efficient" depends on definitions.

For example, magnetohydrodynamics thrusters (MPDT) have — theoretically — specific impulses three times today's xenon-based ion thrusters, and 25 times that of liquid-fuel rockets. Much of that tech is still in the research and development stage, though.

Even further from practical applications — we know the physics involved in beamed core antimatter rocket motors: but haven't developed the technologies needed. Yet.

My guess is that we're decades, not centuries, from tech like MPDT. Beamed core rocket motors may take longer. Or not.

In 1903, when Konstantin Tsiolkovsky published his work, we couldn't build interplanetary spaceships. today some folks are wondering when we'll go back to the moon. (May 17, 2013; Apathetic Lemming of the North (October 26, 2012))

Reforming the World — We Must Try

'Kids these days! Nobody takes responsibility! Back in my day, nobody tried blaming the other guy!'

I've been hearing variations on that complaint for more than a half-century now. I started wondering if it was true in my teens. By now, I'm pretty sure that it's not: partly because now I remember the 'good old days:' and like I've said before, they weren't.

One of 'Those Crazy Kids:' Five Decades Later


I was one of "those kids" in the late '60s and early '70s.

Some of us were lazy bums, and others were only too eager to blame our parents, the government, or anyone else, for our problems.

But others were "irresponsible" only in the sense that we wouldn't accept the status quo.

That attitude didn't appeal to folks who believed in buying stuff they didn't need, with money they didn't have, to impress people they didn't like.

We thought we could reform the world: and certain that we had to try.

Five decades later, some of our reforms succeeded. Others didn't turn out as I had hoped. Some of my generation are part of the new establishment.

Me? I still think we can reform the world. I am certain that we must try.

Social Justice


Folks have been thinking about justice, rights, and society, for a long time. Philosophers like Plato and Aristotle generally get credit for first discussing such things, about two dozen centuries back.

But more than a thousand years before Plato and Aristotle, leaders like Hammurabi started writing law codes.

Babylonian law was an effort to define justice: balancing the severity of an offense with an equally-severe punishment.

The Code of Hammurabi's death penalty for robbery (Law #22) seems harsh — partly, I think, because we've made some progress in the last 3,700 years toward building truly just societies.

And we have a great deal more work to do in that direction.

The phrase "social justice" apparently comes from Catholics like Luigi Taparelli — in the 1840s.

Taparelli's "Civiltà Cattolica" says that capitalist and socialist theories don't pay enough attention to ethics. I'm inclined to agree with him. (February 27, 2012; March 13, 2010)

After becoming a Catholic, I had a lot of catching up to do. Most of what I'd heard or read about the Church was either several centuries out of date: or simply wrong.

One of my happy surprises was discovering that social justice, Catholic style, makes sense. Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1928-1942 is a pretty good place to start learning about the Church's social teachings. I put links to more resources at the end of this post.

'I Love Humanity...'


A sincere desire to make the world a better place can slip into an 'I love humanity, it's people I can't stand' attitude: and I've been over that before. (October 15, 2012)

The basic rules are simple:
This "love" can't be an abstract attitude of social concern. Luke 10:30-37 shows that we're supposed to do something about our beliefs.

That's where personal responsibility comes in.

'It's Not Fair!'


Today's reading from the Old Testament start with a familiar complaint:
"You say, 'The LORD'S way is not fair!' Hear now, house of Israel: Is it my way that is unfair, or rather, are not your ways unfair?
(Ezekiel 18:25)
That chapter of Ezekiel starts with a proverb about grapes and teeth:
"Thus the word of the LORD came to me: Son of man,

"1 what is the meaning of this proverb that you recite in the land of Israel: 'Fathers have eaten green grapes, thus their children's teeth are on edge'?

"As I live, says the Lord GOD: I swear that there shall no longer be anyone among you who will repeat this proverb in Israel."
(Ezekiel 18:1-3)
The footnote explains that the 'teeth on edge' proverb was used by folks claiming that they were being punished for something their ancestors had done: not their own wrongdoings. You'll see the same proverb mentioned in Jeremiah 31:29.

Looks like trying to shift responsibility goes back at least 26 centuries. Now that I think of it, Adam tried blaming his wife: and God. (August 29, 2014)

While I'm thinking of it — today's readings are Ezekiel 18:25-28, Philippians 2:1-11, and Matthew 21:28-32.

Faith, Works, and Perspective


The Gospel reading, Matthew 21:28-32, is the one about two sons: one who said "I will not," but later decided to do his job anyway; the other, who said "yes, sir," but didn't.

Jesus went on to remind the chief priests and the elders that "tax collectors and prostitutes" had listened to John and accepting what he said:
"25 When John came to you in the way of righteousness, you did not believe him; but tax collectors and prostitutes did. Yet even when you saw that, you did not later change your minds and believe him."(Matthew 21: 32)
I could cherry-pick that verse from Matthew, and a few others, and decide that all I have to do is 'really believe.' That would be a bad idea.

Faith is important, but "faith without works is dead." (James 2:14-26; Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1815)
"You believe that God is one. You do well. Even the demons believe that and tremble.

"Do you want proof, you ignoramus, that faith without works is useless?

"Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar?

"You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by the works."
(James 2:19-22)
I can't 'work my way into Heaven.' My salvation depends on my Lord. But I can't 'believe' my way into Heaven, either.

Where I spend eternity depends on my faith and works. (Catechism, 1021, 1814-1816, 1987-1995)

Okay: I'm supposed to act as if my beliefs mean something; I can't shift responsibility to my parents, ancestors, society, whatever; and social justice is important.

What can I, as an individual, do to end world hunger, broker a lasting peace in the Middle East, and cure the common cold? I'm one man, living in central Minnesota, with a computer and an Internet connection: so the answer is — not much.

I can, however, do what is possible for someone in my position: act as if God matters, and work at conforming my will to God's.

As a youth, I realized that reforming the world would take time: and that anything I did would be only a small part of the work. Since then, I've learned more about humanity's back-story.

I think we'll still be supporting what is good, and changing what is not, when the United Nations Charter seems as remote as the Code of Hammurabi does today.

I don't think we'll have a perfect society in the 57th century, but we do have a reasonable hope of building a better world. And that's another topic.

What's That Doing in a Nice Catholic Blog?

From time to time, a service that I use will display links to - odd - services and retailers.

I block a few of the more obvious dubious advertisers.

For example: psychic anything, numerology, mediums, and related practices are on the no-no list for Catholics. It has to do with the Church's stand on divination. I try to block those ads.

Sometime regrettable advertisements get through, anyway.

Bottom line? What that service displays reflects the local culture's norms, - not Catholic teaching.
