There's more to this season than relatives renewing their bonds and unwrapping gifts:
"...Joy is the true gift of Christmas, not expensive presents that demand time and money. This joy comes, in part, from knowing why we're celebrating. About two thousand years ago, God stepped into the world, getting personally involved:
"We can transmit this joy simply: with a smile, with a kind gesture, with some small help, with forgiveness...."

(quoted on the USCCB website (2012))
"10 In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,Mary's baby grew up; broke the power of sin and death; then left, giving us instructions and a promise:
"to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin's name was Mary."
(Luke 1:26-27)
"And the Word became flesh 9 and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father's only Son, full of grace and truth."
(John 1:14)
"11 Then Jesus approached and said to them, 'All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.And that's another topic.
"Go, therefore, 12 and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit,
"teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. 13 And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.' "
